Because Fairfax County is part of the Washington, D.C. metro area, the 2020 Genworth Cost of Care Survey combines the county’s costs for care with the nation’s capital. In Fairfax County, seniors pay an average of $6,000 a month for assisted living care. This is a high average, especially when compared to the national average of $4,300. It is also $1,200 more than the state’s average of $4,850.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Fairfax County, VA and Nearby Cities

Throughout the state of Virginia, costs for care vary quite a bit. While the Fairfax County area has one of the highest averages at $6,000 a month, Harrisonburg is even higher at $6,286. Charlottesville is also close to the Fairfax County average, but about $107 less at $5,893 a month. The most affordable community for assisted living care in Virginia is Richmond, which averages $3,645 a month. In Virginia Beach, seniors pay an average of $4,365, while in Blacksburg on the southwest side of the state, the average drops to just $4,000. Many cities are close to the state’s average. In fact, in Staunton, assisted living costs the same as the state average, $4,850, while in Lynchburg, the cost is just a little more at $4,939.

Through VICAP, seniors can verify that they are utilizing all of the Medicare resources available to them to help pay for medical care and assisted living costs. The service can also connect seniors to Medicare-participating physicians.
Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman(703) 324-5861The Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman program offers advocacy services to seniors in Fairfax County who are in assisted living facilities. If seniors or their families suspect neglect or abuse, the Ombudsman will investigate the complaint and inform the senior and family members of their rights.
MetroAccess(202) 962-2700MetroAccess is a shared-ride, door-to-door paratransit service for Fairfax County residents who have disabilities that make it impossible to use traditional bus or rail service. The service is available for any trip within a ¾ mile radius of Metrobus and Metrorail service areas. Seniors aged 65 and older can apply for a Reduced Fare SmarTrip Photo ID card that allows them to ride MetroAccess and other Metrobus and Metrorail transit options at a reduced price.
Fairfax County Transportation Options Program(703) 222-9764Fairfax County seniors who need rides outside of the Metrobus and Metrorail service areas can use the Transportation Options Program. TOPS provides discounts to seniors who need taxi service, ride-sharing or other rides around town. This program is available to seniors aged 50 or over who make $50,000 or less per household a year or who are MetroAccess registered users.
Fairfax Veterans Benefits Office(703) 359-1210Seniors in Fairfax County who served in the U.S. military may be eligible for veterans’ services. The Fairfax Benefits Office helps connect these seniors to those services. Veterans can visit the office during the week for walk-in services or make an appointment to ensure they’re getting the benefits they earned through their military service.
Fairfax County(703) 820-2131Fairfax County operates a number of Senior Centers that provide adults aged 50 and older with a place to connect with other members of the community, pursue interests and hobbies and get access to senior-friendly services. Transportation to these senior centers from an assisted living community is provided when needed.
