Residents can expect to pay approximately $854 more than the national average of $4,300 per month, but costs in the area are more similar to the state average as a whole, at just $354 above the monthly estimate of $4,800.
Rockland County’s assisted living costs are relatively affordable in comparison to other locations in the state. About 35 miles to the south, costs in New York City are $5,991 per month, which is $837 higher. Further north, however, seniors in Albany pay approximately $354 less, or $4,800 per month. Costs start to increase further west; Binghamton residents are charged only $57 less than those living in Rockland County. In upstate New York, Rochester is slightly more expensive, at about $26 more. Costs in Elmira, which is toward the center of the state, are $470 higher, or $5,624 per month. Watertown, the northernmost city in the state, charges a monthly rate of $6,034, which is $880 more expensive. Finally, seniors in Ithaca can expect to pay the highest rate in the state at $13,500 per month, whereas those who live in Rockland County will pay $8,364 less.

The Assisted Living Program (ALP) provides financial assistance to a limited number of people in assisted living facilities in New York. Rockland County seniors who receive Social Security benefits may also be eligible for financial help through the Optional State Supplement (OSS).

Volunteers help protect the rights of seniors by addressing complaints made by residents or their families. The ombudsman is responsible for solving problems related to quality of care, proper transfer and discharge, elder abuse and medical services. Seniors may also receive assistance to be placed at a facility that suits their particular needs. |
Rockland County Office for the Aging | (845) 364-2110 | The Office for the Aging provides a range of services to older adults who live in Rockland County. Seniors receive counseling on the housing options available to them, and social workers answer their questions about moving to an assisted living residence. Legal assistance on elder issues is also offered, and socialization programs help seniors to avoid isolation. |
Rockland County TRIPS Paratransit Program | (845) 364-2065 | This program offers low-cost transportation for those who are unable to use standard, fixed-route buses. The curb-to-curb service operates from Monday to Saturday, and appointments must be made at least one day in advance. Eligible participants must be seniors aged 60 and over or have a physical or mental impairment covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act. |
Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program | (845) 364-2110 | Through the Rockland County Office for the Aging, this program provides one-on-one counseling about Medicare and private health coverage. Trained volunteers educate seniors at no cost about the types of services their insurance provider may pay. The program’s staff helps older adults understand their medical bills, and seniors also receive assistance to detect and report possible Medicare abuse or fraud situations. |
Rockland County Senior Centers | (845) 356-9600 | Rockland County’s Office for the Aging has several senior centers at different locations throughout the area. A wealth of recreational activities and social engagement programs are available, including lectures, musical performances, fitness classes, group trips and workshops. Seniors have access to home-delivered meals or an on-site hot lunch, and door-to-door transportation is offered. Seniors aged 60 and over are eligible to use the services provided at these centers. |
