South Jersey connects to larger cities such as Philadelphia with a monthly average of $4,875 for assisted living, only $275 more per month than the Vineland area. Just west of South Jersey, across the bay, is Dover, Delaware with monthly costs for assisted living averaging $6,180 compared to neighboring Ocean City, which is $1,284 less than Dover. New York City, unsurprisingly, is the most expensive in the area at $6,950, reflecting the much higher cost of living in the nation’s biggest metropolitan area.

The Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019 has an average of $6,400 per month for assisted living in the state of New Jersey, making New Jersey an average of $2,349 more for assisted living than the national monthly average of $4,051. The three main areas of South Jersey are the Vineland area, Ocean City and the Atlantic City area. The Vineland area averages $4,600 a month for assisted living, making it $1,800 less than the state’s average. Ocean City’s monthly cost for assisted living is $4,896 and the Atlantic City area is $5,200. These two east-shore locations are $1,504 and $1,200 less per month, respectively than the state cost.
New Jersey offers Medicaid waivers that may help those who qualify offset the costs of an assisted living facility. Qualifications are set through the state’s Department of Human Services. This program was created in 2017 and is titled Medicaid Managed Long-Term Services and Supports (MLTSS). This falls under the federal government’s Comprehensive Medicaid Waiver. New Jersey’s system has no enrollment caps, meaning that all those who are eligible to receive services will receive them.

Luncheon meals are served five days a week in Vineland, Millville, Commercial Twp., Maurice River Twp. and Bridgeton. Several other sites serve lunch two to three days a week. Reservations are needed, and the program offers free blood pressure screening. Lunch includes hot, nutritious meals, and all seniors are welcome. |
Cumberland County Meals on Wheels Program | (856) 453-2159 or 453-2231 | Meals on Wheels offered by Cumberland County delivers hot, nutritious and well-balanced meals for seniors who cannot provide their own meals. Special dietary needs are accommodated such as low sodium, diabetic meals and others prescribed by a physician. Meals are delivered to senior’s homes Monday through Friday and weekends for those who need the additional days. Seniors 60 and older who live in Cumberland County are eligible. |
NJSave | P.O. Box 715, Trenton, NJ 08625-0715 | Federal and state programs that seek to help seniors live in their communities as long as possible are part of the NJ Division on Aging Services. NJSave includes several of these programs seniors can apply for online or by mail. Programs include assistance for low-income seniors and adults with disabilities helping them in areas such as prescription costs, utility bills, help to obtain hearing aids, supplemental nutrition assistance programs (SNAP), and miscellaneous needs such as reduced motor vehicle fees, low-cost spaying or neutering and property tax freeze programs. |

Activities include holiday parties, senior dances, help with living wills, regular wills and attorney services and a monthly trip to the casino.
