Miami-Dade County may be a good option for seniors seeking affordable senior care, with fees coming in among the lowest in the state at $3,500. The state does contain a few cities with even more economically priced care, including the Tampa area, where assisted living facilities charge approximately $3,225 monthly, and the Sebring area, where fees are $2,895. In Ocala, care costs exceed the state average but are affordable compared to the national rate at $4,000 per month, and in the Sebastian area, assisted living facilities charge $4,500. Panama City is considerably pricier at $5,161. The capital city of Tallahassee is the most expensive Florida city for assisted living, with care fees averaging $5,506 per month.

In 2014, the state of Florida replaced all their HCBS waiver programs with the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care Program (SMMC-LTC), which helps eligible seniors pay for assisted living costs. Florida also has the Optional State Supplement (OSS), a non-Medicaid program available for qualified seniors.

Through federal funding, this local nonprofit agency administers a broad array of programs including legal services, disaster information and preparedness, Living Healthy workshops and Medicare options counseling. The agency provides information on local programs such as the Aging and Disability Resource Center and REFER, a searchable online database with organizations that provide recreational opportunities, clothing, tax preparation assistance and health and dental services. It also has a long-term care ombudsman that monitors conditions and practices in assisted living facilities, educates residents of their rights and advocates on behalf of those who’ve experienced abuse, neglect or exploitation in long-term care facilities. |
Veteran Services Program | (305) 270-2940 | The Veteran Services Program promotes access to state and federal benefits for qualifying veterans and their family members. Through this program, veterans get help with identifying and applying for programs such as the Aid and Attendance benefit, pension programs and disability compensation. The program also provides assistance with hospitalization and burial expenses and dependence and indemnity compensation. |
Mayor’s Initiative on Aging | (305) 375-5648 | The Mayor’s Initiative on Aging provides older adults with information on programs in the county that meet their needs and provide social and recreational opportunities. Some activities that are open to community participation include health education and disease prevention classes, nutrition education and consultations, interactive fitness activities, health screenings and presentations on senior safety. Several local agencies, including Aventura Hospital and Medical Center and Jackson Health System, host free health fairs and screenings in cooperation with the Initiative on Aging. |
SHINE | (800) 963-5337 | SHINE is the statewide senior health insurance program that provides free, objective information and guidance for Medicare-eligible residents. It’s staffed by trained volunteers who can help seniors understand their Medicare benefits and review Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plan options. Volunteers can also help seniors sort and understand their medical bills and address billing errors. Assistance is provided on a one-on-one basis at various sites throughout the county and in virtual and in-person group classes. |
Senior Volunteer Programs | (786) 469-4851 | The county provides volunteer opportunities for those aged 55 and over through RSVP. Through this program, Miami-Dade seniors volunteer in nearly 80 local agencies and organizations, including the local airport, senior centers, hospitals and medical centers, VA centers and schools. Volunteers work for at least three hours per week in exchange for benefits such as travel reimbursement, liability insurance and, in some cases, meals. |
