VA Aid and Attendance Benefits | (800) 827-1000 | The VA Aid and Attendance benefit can help U.S. military veterans and their spouses currently residing in senior living communities. It’s a monthly payment added to the VA pension that can be used to cover some care costs, including room and board. Although payments vary between vets, the maximums are $1,881 per month for a single vet, $2,230 for a couple and $1,209 for a surviving spouse. Vets unsure if they qualify can check by using the free online tool at VeteranAid.org. |
Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders (CHCPE) | (800) 445-5394 | CHCPE is a Medicaid waiver program for low-income adults aged 65 and older who are at risk of needing nursing home care but can reside in an assisted living facility. For seniors who qualify, the program can pay their costs if the facility is an approved provider. The senior will need to provide evidence that assisted living care is the most appropriate for their needs. They will also need to prove that their individual assets are no more than $1,600 and their monthly income is below 300% of the Federal Benefit Rate. |
CHOICES | (800) 994-9422 | CHOICES (Connecticut’s program for Health insurance assistance, Outreach, Information and referral, Counseling, Eligibility Screening) is a state-run program that’s free of charge to Medicare beneficiaries and seniors ready to enroll in a plan. Seniors can get unbiased information, advice, and support from counselors, who can help them identify gaps in their coverage and the Medicare plans that can resolve them. This might include discussions about private health care insurance. However, the counselors won’t try to sell insurance to seniors. |
Long Term Care Ombudsman Program | (866) 388-1888 | The Long-Term Care Ombudsman advocates for residents in senior living facilities throughout the state. Its work includes educating seniors about their rights and investigating complaints about facilities made by them, their families and third parties. The ombudsman can also provide, free of charge, information about facilities to families looking for the best assisted living community for their loved ones. |
Stamford-area assisted living communities must adhere to the comprehensive set of state laws and regulations that all assisted living communities in Connecticut are required to follow. Visit our Assisted Living in Connecticut page for more information about these laws.
