Back in December I needed help for my dad quickly, he had contracted COVID and went from semi-ambulatory to fully invalid almost immediately. Within a week he was non-verbal and non-aware. I contacted the Salem location and they walked me through the necessities. After I finally got my dad's doctor to respond to their requests they came in and got us signed up and a nurse out on the same day. They arranged for a hospital bed (something we desperately needed) and medication. They bathed him, changed his sheets, and gave me all the information I needed to care for him. When the medication that was supposed to come overnight from their main headquarters one of their nurses in Portland found a pharmacy open at 9:00 pm, got the prescription, met another nurse from Salem halfway up, and that nurse brought the medication to us. That was above and beyond the call of duty. When Dad passed away within a week their person came out at 9:00 pm and stayed with my Mother, sister and I until midnight when the funeral home was able to take care of him. I can't thank the Salem, Oregon people enough for all they did for us. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star for the whole company was because of the medication delivery snafu, the meds didn't arrive until after Dad had died. But the people who were there for us, 5 stars all the way!

This team gave my mom a comfortable 6 months prior to her death, and a peaceful death. They treated her with great compassion and dignity. They worked with me (daughter) on her care and communcated with me often. They responded to every call I made to them right away. I can't overstate the greatness of the gift they gave to our family in the care of my mother. I recommend them with hesitation.

Pros, the nurse aide that assisted Dad with his bath and personal care was caring and gentle- he really appreciated her. The intake nurse was informative. Cons. - unfortunately this overshadows everything else. Dad went from walking, talking, eating to basically comatose and unresponsive as soon as the nurse decided to give him a combination narcotic. The assisted living staff told me that the nurse was going to give Dad the meds and I said that I wanted her to call me first or wait for me as I was on my way, but I never received a call. My concern is that I don't believe my dad would have wanted to give up his right to say goodbye to my siblings who were flying in from out of state - I don't believe he was given the opportunity to provide an informed consent. It was a very sad situation. I tried to explain this to the Hospice staff afterwards, but got excuses or blank faces rather than an acknowledgement that it would have been a good idea to speak with me about the ramifications of what she was ordering. The intake nurse had indicated that it was much more of a partnership that it proved to be.

Hospice Care of the Northwest is an excellent provider of hospice care and compassion to patients and their families. As stated in another comment, this organization is small enough to be "family" yet large enough to get the job completed well. The RN's, CNA's, Social Workers, Chaplains, and Volunteers all communicate patient/family/facility needs in a positive manner and a smile on their faces! I would recommend Hospice Care of the Northwest over other Portland providers with whom I have had contact through the years- most associated with a hospital system. Bravo! Keep up the *Great work!

My father was under the care of Hospice of the NW from 9/2009-11/2012. I truly believe it was because of their care that my father lived so long, and with a quality of life he wouldn't have had otherwise. The whole team was very caring, and the chaplain performed his memorial service, which was one of the best I had ever attended. They loved my father and my father loved them.

We have had a extremly poor relationship with this hospice. The R.N's we have been in contact with are VERY rude and don't listen. They spend more time with other people and not the patient. This is a very unprofessional organization and I would not refer anyone to them. Please save yourself the frustration and hearbreak...look elsewhere.

Did you know that if you require hospice care, you have the right to choose your own hospice agency? Medicare gives you this right. Your doctor may recommend a particular agency, but you have the final say! You can also easily change agencies if you are dissatisfied or move out of your agency's service area. Hospice Care of the Northwest is an independent agency providing hospice care to patients in a variety of facilities and at home. The service areas are the Portland, OR metro region, and the Salem, OR metro region Because the company is smaller than many, all staff members know each other and communicate with one another on a regular basis. What this means is that from the office staff to the Case Managers, the Social Workers, Chaplains, to the Nursing Assistants and volunteers; everyone is "on the same page". This also means that all staff members understand the importance of being team players. From HCNW, you can expect an amazing level of attentiveness, response, and always in an atmosphere of caring and professional conduct. I whole heartedly recommend this agency to anyone who needs hospice care.
