Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Suffolk County:
Resource | Contact | Service | Address |
---|---|---|---|
Senior Resident Services | (631) 436-1892 | The Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI) is a nonprofit organization that provides a range of senior services at four different venues across the county. The aim of the services is to assist seniors to age in place and remain independent for as long as possible. Volunteers help seniors to apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Housing Choice Voucher. Additionally, they help seniors fill out paperwork, pay bills and understand programs such as Medicare Part D. The centers also offer activities, including arts and crafts, movie screenings, fitness classes and wellness programs. | |
Catholic Charities of Long Island | (631) 789-5219 | The Catholic Charities of Long Island is a nonprofit organization that is funded by community donations and staffed by volunteers from the church. It serves hot meals at congregate sites two days a week for senior citizens in the area. There is no charge for the meals, and transport to the sites can be arranged. In addition, the organization runs a Meals on Wheels program that delivers warm or frozen meals to seniors in the area on a daily or weekly basis. Seniors need to be homebound to qualify for the program, and a small donation is requested for the meals. Case managers can assist seniors in applying for other programs that they may qualify for. | 143 Schleigel Boulevard, Amityville, NY 11701 |
The Weatherization Assistance Program | (631) 471-1215 Ext 155 | The Weatherization Assistance Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This free program assists low-income households to reduce their energy costs. Priority is given to the elderly and disabled residents. An energy audit is conducted on the property to determine what cost-effective measures could be installed to reduce energy usage. Some of the services offered include attic insulation, weather stripping, and repairing or replacing water heaters. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
