Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Fort Myers:

Meals on Wheels | (239) 332-7687 | 3429 Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard, Fort Myers, FL 33916 | The Community Cooperative is a nonprofit organization that runs the Meals on Wheels program in Fort Myers. Volunteers distribute one meal a day to eligible seniors in the Fort Myers area from Monday to Friday. Frozen meals can be purchased for the weekend. There is a small fee charged for each meal but financial aid is available for those that cannot afford the payment. Additionally, the program provides food and care products for the pets who belong to homebound seniors. The aim of the program is to provide one nutritionally balanced meal to seniors each day so that they continue to safely live in their own homes for as long as possible. |
Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program | (239) 652-6900 | 2830 Winkler Avenue, Suite 112, Fort Myers, FL 33916 | This is a federal and state-funded program that aims to assist low-income households who are facing an energy crisis. One resident of the home must be over the age of 60 in order to receive assistance. An energy crisis occurs if the residents are facing a utilities shut-off notice or a delinquent bill. Households are eligible for energy assistance twice a year: once in the cooler months and once in the summer. |
Respite Care | (850) 414-2000 | 4040 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee, FL 32399 | This is a state-funded volunteer program that provides respite services for families and caregivers. The aim of the program is to increase the ability of families to care for homebound elderly family members on a long-term basis. Respite services are available in the evenings and over weekends to help ease the burden of care. All of the caregivers are volunteers who are carefully screened and matched with clients who have similar personalities and interests. There is no charge for the relief service, but donations to the program are gratefully accepted. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
