Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Loveland:
Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
---|---|---|---|
A Little Help | (970) 412-9396 | 19 Old Town Square, Suite 238 Fort Collins, CO 80524 | This nonprofit connects neighbors with seniors to provide assistance with basic chores, transportation, help with technology and household handyman support. These include snow removal, respite care, transportation and social activities, and it also provides a hub for local resources. A Little Help also seeks to keep seniors engaged with their community by offering educational programs and regular events across the Loveland area and beyond. |
Fort Collins Meals on Wheels Program | (970) 472-9630 | 1217 East Elizabeth #11, Fort Collins, CO 80524 | The Volunteers of America Meals on Wheels Program in Fort Collins delivers meals to those who have difficulty preparing meals and are primarily homebound. Meals are delivered Monday to Friday between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, typically consisting of a full lunch, with two vegetables and a roll, salad and dessert to ensure seniors and other people who qualify receive at least a third of their recommended daily diet. More active seniors can volunteer with this organization. |
Volunteers of America Handyman Program | (970) 472-9630 | 405 Canyon Ave, Fort Collins, CO 80525 | The Volunteers of America Handyman Program offers seniors free assistance with basic home repair projects. This can include simple safety repairs around the house or chores such as shoveling snow. While assistance is free, clients must pay for the materials required. Additional services such as veteran support and senior dining are also offered by the VOA. |
The Larimer County Office on Aging | (970) 498-7750 | 1501 Blue Spruce, Fort Collins, CO, 80524 | The Larimer County Office on Aging offers several useful services to seniors in the area. The chore voucher program gives seniors financial support to complete tasks they may not be physically able to do like laundry or cleaning. Additional services offered include a family caregiver support program, an in-home services voucher program and assistance with filling out all applications for help. Seniors seeking vouchers or additional support should contact the Larimer County Office on Aging. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
