Both of Rachel’s grandmothers had very positive experiences in senior living communities, and Rachel saw firsthand the impact that kind, committed caregivers and community managers can have on seniors’ and their family members’ lives. With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers

Medicare and Medicaid-eligible seniors in West Virginia qualify for financial assistance for home health care services deemed medically necessary. Both Medicare and Medicaid waivers cover the cost of medical assistance, including IV therapy, wound care and skilled nursing for those who are eligible.

Qualifying for Medicare and Medicaid

Seniors must meet eligibility requirements to receive benefits from Medicare and Medicaid. Those receiving Social Security benefits are automatically enrolled. Requirements include:

Medicare

  • U.S. citizen
  • Age 65 or older
  • Require nursing home level of care

Medicaid

  • Resident of West Virginia
  • U.S. citizen or qualified immigrant
  • 65 years of age or older or disabled
  • Must meet specific income requirements

What Home Health Services are Covered?

Both Medicare and Medicaid covers medically necessary services in home health care. These services may include rehabilitation after surgery or for a chronic illness or physical, speech and occupational therapy. Home health also covers medication administration, catheter changes and management of your doctor’s care plan. Activities of daily living aren’t covered directly but may be covered through the Medicaid Aged and Disabled Waiver. These services include bathing, grooming, meal prep and transportation.
