Seniors in Minnesota with limited financial means and need a certain level of care may qualify for financial support for assisted living. Monetary aid doesn’t generally cover any costs for bed or board in Minnesota’s assisted living facilities. However, it may cover any costs associated with personal care and domestic services, assistance with day-to-day activities, medication management and basic health services.
Minnesota’s state Medicaid program, which is called Medical Assistance, does not provide direct funding for assisted living. Rather, seniors may qualify for financial assistance under the Elderly Waiver program within state Medicaid.
How to Qualify for the Elderly Waiver in Minnesota
Applicants for the Elderly Waiver must fulfill diverse requirements related to financial, functional and personal matters. Eligibility criteria for a single applicant include:
- U.S. citizen or legal alien
- Permanent full-time resident of Minnesota
- At least 65 years old
- Income limit of $2,742
- Asset limit of $3,000
- Need for nursing home level of care
Individuals who meet all criteria may be wait-listed for services. Additionally, funding is accepted only by specific facilities.
How to Apply for the Elderly Waiver in Minnesota
Seniors should complete the relevant application form and provide proof of all income and countable assets. Application assistance is available from local health or human services agencies, the state’s Senior LinkAge Line and tribal nations centers. Seniors also need to complete a free needs assessment to determine whether they meet the level of care requirements.
