Both of Rachel’s grandmothers had very positive experiences in senior living communities, and Rachel saw firsthand the impact that kind, committed caregivers and community managers can have on seniors’ and their family members’ lives. With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers

Assisted living is more expensive than independent living. The average cost of room and board at an assisted living community is $4,500 per month. In comparison, rental rates for independent senior living communities start at around $1,650 per month.

Why does assisted living cost more than independent living?

Assisted living costs more than independent living because assisted living includes additional services. Most assisted living communities provide help with activities of daily living, transportation and meals and may offer other forms of support.

While some independent living communities have similar amenities, others offer only the basics at a more affordable price. Services such as daily meals, special events, housekeeping and outings often have an added cost. If you need help, you can arrange for an aide from a third-party service to come to your home.

What factors affect the cost of assisted and independent living?

Many factors affect the cost of assisted and independent living options for seniors. Cost varies significantly depending on geographic location, the level of care your loved one needs, community amenities, the size and type of community, and the overall cost of living in your area.

Does Medicare or Medicaid cover the cost of assisted living?

Medicare doesn’t cover assisted living, but Medicaid pays part of the cost of assisted living in many states. If you live in a state with a Medicaid waiver program and meet income limits and other eligibility requirements, you could receive coverage. In this case, assisted living could end up costing less than an independent living community, which Medicaid doesn’t cover.
