According to the Genworth 2021 Cost of Care Survey, the nationwide average monthly rate for assisted living care is $4,500. Assisted living fees in your area will depend on the location, the type of accommodations offered and the amenities included.

To help give you an idea of what you can expect to pay for assisted living care, we’ve prepared a brief overview of the average rates in various states and major cities throughout the nation. We’ve also listed the services and amenities that are commonly included in monthly assisted living rates.

Average Assisted Living Rates in the United States

In terms of statewide average rates, seniors in Alaska pay some of the highest rates in the nation at $6,633 per month. Rates are even higher in New Hampshire and New Jersey, where seniors pay an average of $6,650 per month for assisted living care.

Rates are also well above the national average in Washington state, Vermont, Connecticut and Delaware at $5,750, $5,310, $6,300 and $6,690, respectively. With respective monthly costs of $3,150, $3,000 and $3,595, Alabama, Missouri and Nevada are among the least expensive states for assisted living care.

What’s Included in the Cost of Assisted Living

To help you weigh your senior care options, it’s important to know what is, and isn’t, included in monthly assisted living rates. While services and amenities vary between facilities, assisted living fees at most facilities cover:

  • Semiprivate or private accommodations in either an apartment-style suite or a bedroom with an en suite bathroom
  • Three daily meals, plus snacks and beverages
  • Basic utilities, such as water, power and heating/cooling
  • 24/7 support from on-site caregivers
  • Housekeeping and personal laundry services
  • Use of common amenities, such as an arts and crafting studio, fitness room, games room, nondenominational worship space and landscaped courtyard or campus
  • Access to daily social and recreational programming led by in-house recreation staff
  • Local transportation to medical appointments, banks and shopping areas

Some assisted living facilities also include Wi-Fi, basic telephone and cable television services.
