In South Carolina, the average cost of hiring a home health aide is $23.50 per hour. This is $3.50 less than the national average of $27, making South Carolina a smart choice for people seeking affordable care. Housing costs and other life necessities are well below the average here, too, and the state offers a Medicaid program that can help cover home health costs for low-income individuals. Below, learn more about average hourly home health rates in South Carolina, as well as several factors that can affect the price of care.

Home health aide costs in South Carolina cities

In South Carolina, seniors will find the cheapest home health aide prices in the northwestern part of the state. Spartanburg’s prices average just $21.88, or $5.12 less than the U.S. average. About 30 miles to the west in Greenville, rates go up to $24.50. Florence’s prices are a bit higher than Spartanburg’s, averaging $22, and seniors in Columbia pay $1 more than Spartanburg.

Myrtle Beach residents pay an estimated $25 for their care. Home health in Sumter and Charleston will cost seniors $26 and $26.25, respectively. The priciest city for care in South Carolina is Hilton Head Island. Here, it will cost an average of $29.25 to hire an aide.

What can affect home health aide costs?

Home health aide costs can vary widely, and you might have to pay less or more depending on several factors. These include:

  • Location: Prices for home health tend to be lower outside of major cities, but in more rural areas, you might have fewer providers to choose from. Prices are typically higher in desirable areas, such as cities close to the beach.
  • Your health: If you have one or more serious health conditions, the cost for your care may be higher.
  • The level of care needed: Prices are generally lower if you only need care for a few hours a day. If you require around-the-clock monitoring, expect rates to go up.
  • Services offered: Prices might be higher for seniors who need a lot of help with their activities of daily living, such as bathing, toileting, feeding and getting dressed.
