With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers

There are approximately 35 memory care facilities in Mississippi. Memory care is designed to provide a safe place and full care for seniors experiencing memory loss from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. While individual communities may vary in their offerings, they typically provide similar care packages and a specially designed environment.

Memory Care Packages

Memory care communities usually offer a customized care package for each resident based on the level of care needed as well as on personal preferences. Seniors receive assistance with the activities of daily living, such as bathing or showering, grooming, dressing, eating and mobility. Caregivers also manage medications and administer them to residents at the proper times and in the right dosages. Staff members work closely with family members and health care professionals to make sure each resident’s needs are fully met.

Seniors in memory care also receive help with housekeeping and laundry, so they never have to struggle with these chores on their own. Memory care communities serve three meals per day, and menus are designed around residents’ dietary needs and personal tastes. Because seniors with memory loss often have difficulty eating, many communities provide finger foods or puréed options and offer snacks and beverages throughout the day.

The Memory Care Environment

The memory care environment is specially designed to meet the unique needs of people struggling with memory loss. Facilities are fully secure. Doors remain locked at all times so that residents can’t wander. Outdoor spaces are fenced and gated so that residents can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine in safety. Many communities have incorporated video monitoring into their emergency response systems because some residents can’t remember to press an emergency alert button.

Residents in memory care communities often have a choice between a private room or a shared suite. While these rooms are usually small, they’re supplemented by comfortable common areas where seniors can gather for socialization and activities. Common areas are designed for a homelike feel with plenty of natural light, comfortable furnishings and beautiful artwork. Activities may include everything from games and movies to puzzles and music, and they’re intended to stimulate the mind and build meaningful connections.
