With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers

There are 327 licensed community residential care facilities, also known as assisted living facilities, in South Carolina. The state defines these facilities as providing room, board and personal care services to two or more adults who are unrelated by blood or marriage. These homes cost, on average $3,612 per month, according to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. This is $888 less than the national median price of $4,500 for assisted living.

What Do Assisted Living Communities Provide?

Assisted living facilities are one of many residential options for seniors needing long-term care. Older adults who require assistance with some activities of daily living or instrumental activities of daily living often choose to move to assisted living communities to make use of the 24-hour support and care. In these assisted living communities, seniors retain their privacy and independence while still receiving help as needed. The facilities may be converted homes or dormitories where seniors receive a room, or they may offer apartment-style living. Some offer companion suites and shared rooms, while others are private.

These communities develop personalized care plans to meet individualized needs, providing assistance with grooming, housekeeping, toileting and other daily activities. Typically, they serve meals three times daily and offer a range of amenities, such as fitness centers, libraries, gaming rooms, theaters, courtyards and cafes.

How to Find an Assisted Living Facility in South Carolina

With so many options for assisted living communities in South Carolina, finding the right one can be difficult. A local senior living advisor can help a senior and their loved ones find the right community for them. A senior living advisor is an expert in local assisted living and other senior living options. They can provide insight into various care communities and discuss concerns before a senior makes a decision.

Before choosing a home, a senior should make a list of their preferences and desires for their prospective community. Most people consider location, size, services, cost and culture when determining the right option for them. Other considerations may include pet-friendliness, amenities offered and room types. Seniors should tour the communities that meet their expectations and budget and choose the one that best suits their needs.
