With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers
Nebraska is home to 182 assisted living facilities. In Nebraska, a license is required to operate an assisted living community that has four or more residents. These small communities are often in private homes that have been adapted to the needs of seniors. Other facilities are significantly larger and may have room for over a hundred residents that require various levels of care.
Assisted Living Services
Assisted living facilities typically provide nonmedical care to seniors who need some extra help with their daily tasks. Most communities offer an individual care plan to each resident that is flexible enough to change as a resident’s needs evolve. Staff members may assist with daily living activities like bathing and grooming, administer medication, help manage diabetes or incontinence and handle housekeeping and laundry. Assisted living facilities also have emergency call systems for immediate needs.
Seniors who live in assisted living communities have plenty of opportunities for socialization and enjoyment. Most facilities offer a range of activities, such as entertainment, games, exercise and social hours. Residents sometimes take group outings or participate in pet therapy or intergenerational programs as well. Many assisted living facilities provide therapy and salon services on-site for added convenience.
Reasons To Choose Assisted Living
Assisted living may be a good option for seniors who are still mostly independent but become overwhelmed with household chores or personal care tasks. Some may struggle with maintaining their own homes. Others have difficulty keeping up with the laundry or with personal hygiene. Still, others need help managing their medications and reminders to take their pills on time. Assisted living provides these services to lower stress and promote good health.
As people grow older, they may also find themselves becoming isolated and lonely. The community environment provided by an assisted living facility can decrease that tendency. Seniors who live in a community have opportunities to socialize, pursue their interests in the company of others and develop new friendships. This mental and emotional support contributes to overall health and wellness.
