The amount of time it takes for a person to get into assisted living varies based on the community and other factors. You could secure a spot within 6 months of putting down an initial deposit at most assisted living communities. Some places offer emergency placement if your loved one has an urgent need, such as short-term rehab following a surgical procedure.

When should you apply for assisted living?

Start the process of finding an assisted living community at least a year before your loved one plans to make the transition. About 29% of assisted living communities have a waiting list for admission.

To determine whether your family member requires support to maintain their independence, watch for these signs.:

  • Social isolation or depression
  • Decline in personal care
  • Difficulty with housekeeping and preparing meals
  • Frequent falls and other mobility issues

You may also want to start the process early if the person has one or more chronic conditions, such as diabetes.

Age is also a factor in the decision. Almost a third of assisted living residents fall into the 75 to 84 age group, and half have reached age 85 or older. Exploring assisted living options in advance can help ensure your family member has a spot at their selected facility when the time comes to make the move.
