Rachel Lustbader is a writer and editor with a background in healthcare and technology. Her work has been published on websites including HealthCare.com, BiteSizeBio.com, BetterHelp.com, Caring.com, and PayingforSeniorCare.com. She studied health science and public health at Boston University.

Both of Rachel’s grandmothers had very positive experiences in senior living communities, and Rachel saw firsthand the impact that kind, committed caregivers and community managers can have on seniors’ and their family members’ lives. With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers

It’s been suggested that it can take 3-6 months to adjust to assisted living, but it’s impossible to predict an exact time frame. The adjustment period can vary greatly, depending on the individual and their circumstances, and it may be days, weeks or months before they are fully adjusted.

What influences the time it takes to adjust to assisted living?

Many factors can influence the time it takes a senior to adjust to assisted living, and everyone’s experience is unique. A senior with a positive mindset and openness to change may adapt more quickly than someone with a negative attitude. A person who lived alone and struggled with everyday demands may also welcome the change and adapt more quickly, unless they harbor strong feelings about losing their independence.

On the other hand, a senior who had been living with family before making the move may miss having their loved ones around and could take longer to adapt to their new surroundings. Similarly, someone who is leaving behind a beloved pet will probably have a harder time adjusting than those who can bring their pets.

How can you help your loved one adjust to assisted living?

To make your loved one’s transition to assisted living easier, involve them in the decision-making process. Assist them in planning for the move by determining what they should and shouldn’t bring, and make their new living space feel familiar and cozy by using their favorite furnishings and decorations.

After the move, act as your loved one’s advocate for as long as they need. When they express frustrations or fears, listen empathetically and reassure them that you’re trying to understand their emotional experience. Encourage their participation in the wellness programs, and introduce them to other residents with similar interests. Reassure them of your love and commitment. Visit and call regularly and remember to be patient. There is no right or wrong way to feel while adapting to assisted living, and your loved one will adjust at their own pace.
