Both of Rachel’s grandmothers had very positive experiences in senior living communities, and Rachel saw firsthand the impact that kind, committed caregivers and community managers can have on seniors’ and their family members’ lives. With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers

Medicaid pays for in-home care in Michigan through the MI Choice Medicaid Waiver Program. The program and in-home care options are paid for by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Center for Medicaid Services and the Center for Medicare Services. Medicaid participants are not required to pay for any part of this service.

Medicaid itself is a covered service, which means anyone who qualifies for the MI Choice Medicaid Waiver Program will not be required to pay for general health care coverage, either. They will receive their in-home care completely free of charge.

Who Qualifies for In-Home Care Paid for by Michigan?

In-home care that is paid for by the state of Michigan is offered to those eligible for Medicaid who are in need of nursing home-level care. Medicaid recipients include seniors who are over the age of 65 and qualify based on financial need. Younger individuals who suffer from certain qualifying disabilities can also qualify for in-home care through this program.

In-home care may include personal care and homemaking services. This type of care covers not only the care received directly in the home, but also other services that may be necessary for the individual, including day services and transportation to and from appointments.

Are There Alternative Programs for In-Home Care?

The Community Living Program offers support and care for Medicaid participants who do not qualify for the MI Choice Medicaid Waiver Program. The Community Living Program requires Medicaid participants to pay for a portion of their own care, which is decided based on a sliding scale.

Lower-income individuals are given a higher priority for this program. The participant must also demonstrate a need for assistance with daily tasks of living. They may then be able to receive help with personal care and/or homemaking tasks in their own home. Respite care and emergency response systems are also available under this program.
