Yes, Louisiana has several programs that can be used to pay for home health care. These include Medicaid-based programs and specialized initiatives for veterans. In most cases, these programs can also be used to pay for equipment that increases beneficiaries’ safety at home.

What Programs in Louisiana Can Pay for Home Health Care?

Louisiana’s Medicaid program has various waivers that can cover the cost of home health care such as skilled nursing, rehabilitative therapy and nursing aides. The Community Choices Waiver is for people who require a nursing-home level of care but would prefer to stay at home. It can be used to pay for home modifications and assistive devices as well as health care. Additionally, Louisiana offers the Program for All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly (PACE). This program can pay for everything covered by Medicaid as well as a bit more, such as management services, X-rays, prosthetics and dentures.

The state also offers a program that can be used to pay for non-medical personal care at home. The Long-Term Personal Care Services waiver can be used to pay for assistance with activities of daily living such as housekeeping, grooming and bathing. There are additional programs available to Louisiana veterans. The VA provides homemaker and home health aide care to eligible service members. Recipients of a veteran’s pension can also apply for the VA Aid and Attendance or Housebound Benefits programs, which are designed for those who require assistance with day-to-day activities.

Where Can Louisiana Seniors Apply for Assistance?

Seniors or caregivers who are looking for more information about their eligibility for Medicare programs can contact their local Office of Aging and Adult Services. These agencies have social workers who can support seniors throughout the application or appeals process. Veterans can visit their nearest veteran center to get help applying for assistance.
