Humana doesn’t specifically cover assisted living. Almost 8.7 million seniors have a Humana health care insurance policy, with a third of them enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. With the median cost of assisted living at $4,500 per month, many retirees rely on insurance coverage to pay.
Humana health insurance may cover some of the medical costs associated with long-term care. However, seniors need to find alternative financing for bed, board and personal care services that assisted living facilities provide, such as long-term care insurance and retirement benefits.
Humana health care plans for seniors
Seniors can choose from several Humana Medicare health insurance plans, with availability depending on their location.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Retirees aged 65 and older with Medicare Parts A and B can take out Humana Medicare Supplement insurance. Although it doesn’t cover medical or long-term care, the plan helps seniors pay for other out-of-pocket expenses, such as co-payments, deductibles and coinsurance.
Prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D)
Those already enrolled in Original Medicare can opt for Medicare Part D. This standalone Humana plan pays for prescription drugs and helps protect seniors from high medication costs.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
- Hearing
- Vision
- Dental
- 30 days of skilled nursing
- Emergency transportation
- Mobility aids and medical devices
- Screening for certain conditions, including diabetes and cancer
- X-rays and lab tests
Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNP)
Low-income seniors who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid and those with chronic health conditions may be eligible for Humana’s Dual Special Needs Plans. Coverage includes all the benefits of Medicare Parts A, B and D. During 2024, seniors enrolled on a D-SNP receive $0 copays for prescriptions.
Humana USAA Honor Plans
Seniors who have served in the military can access Humana Medicare Advantage plans specifically designed for veterans. Called USAA Honor Plans, these special policies work alongside VA health care and include dental, vision and hearing care as standard. Many Honor Plans offer a $0 monthly premium.
Alternative ways to finance assisted living
With Humana insurance plans not covering the majority of expenses associated with assisted living, seniors need to consider alternative financing options, such as:
- Personal savings and retirement income
- Medicaid and Medicaid waivers
- Annuities and reverse mortgages
- Life insurance policies
- Long-term care insurance
- Cash from selling assets
