With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers

Some assisted living facilities offer veterans discounts, although exact benefits and policies vary depending on the community. These discounts commemorate residents’ military service and accomplishments and help them afford needed care. Additionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs offers benefits and assistance programs for eligible individuals to use toward certain assisted living services.

What veterans discounts do assisted living facilities offer?

Assisted living facilities offer a variety of veterans discounts to alleviate care costs. Some communities provide discounted monthly rates, while others waive admission or move-in fees. In some cases, veterans receive priority placement for care, especially if the community has a partnership or agreement with the VA or a veterans support organization.

If a community doesn’t offer discounts, it may provide specialized programs tailored to the needs of veterans. These programs include support groups, clubs or therapy services. Some communities also help veterans navigate eligibility requirements and apply for VA benefits, which can further reduce care costs.

What VA benefits do assisted living facilities accept?

The VA offers numerous benefits that assisted living facilities accept, depending on the services needed. Aid and Attendance benefits provide monthly payments to veterans receiving VA pensions who meet eligibility requirements, such as needing help performing daily living activities. Veterans must also submit a doctor’s examination report or other proof of condition to be eligible. These benefits cover certain assisted living services, including personal care assistance, but not room and board.

Additionally, veterans aged 65 and older who meet disability and active duty requirements can apply for VA pension benefits. These monthly payments don’t come with restrictions on usage and pay for a wide range of assisted living services, including room and board, personal care assistance or health care. Some assisted living communities also accept VA health benefits for medical care, although co-pays and other doctor fees still apply, depending on coverage.
