How Much Space Is Needed for a Stairlift?
Most stairlift manufacturers recommend a minimum staircase width of around 28 inches for standard-sized straight stairlifts. Curved stairlifts require slightly more space, with manufacturers usually recommending a staircase width of 30 inches for their curved rails. These space requirements are to allow the user to safely get in and out of the chair. In addition to this, there should be clearing space at the top and bottom of the lift, so it can be parked safely.
How to Measure for a Stairlift
When measuring a stairwell to see if a stairlift would fit, it’s important to take into account any space taken up by handrails, decorative moldings, or other obstructions. In some cases, these may need to be removed to make space for the lift.
In addition to measuring the width of the staircase, it’s also important to measure the height and consider the available space on each landing. If there’s less than a foot of clearance between the last step and a doorway, consider using a lift with a folding or retractable rail so the rail does not present a tripping hazard when the stairlift is not in use.
Lift chairs swivel at the top and bottom of the stairs to allow the rider to safely embark and disembark from the lift. This means both landings must be free from furniture and other obstructions.
Stairlift Options for Narrower Staircases
Those who live in homes with very narrow staircases may need to purchase a perch-style stairlift or a lift designed with narrow stairs in mind. Stairlifts with smaller seats that fold up can be useful for those smaller spaces.
The space recommendations given for stairlifts are there for safety reasons. Do not try to install a lift in a space that is too small for it. Those who live in older homes or homes with unusually shaped staircases should speak to a local stairlift specialist and request a custom design.
