I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Carrington of Shafter is very caring and very committed to my friend's care. They're also very committed to letting her do as much as possible on her own, and assisting her instead of doing them for her. So, the people are all wonderful. The residents are all very nice and very caring. It's like a little family. They all care about each other. My friend lives in a nice-sized room with an en suite bathroom and a large walk-in closet. She has enough room for her bed, a recliner, a dresser, a TV, and a nightstand. Then she's able to move around with her walker in there quite easily. Maintenance and upkeep are great. The staff are very loving and very willing to assist. They don't get frustrated easily. I love them. The dining area is beautiful. It's like going into a big dining hall every night, which Mom likes, and she's very happy with the food. The amenities and activities are both great. They have church, singing, painting, a library (she loves to read so she can go and read there), gardening, people come in and do readings, and crafts. So, she is quite busy.

My mom moved into Carrington of Shafter. They have things for them to do. The facility is clean. Everyone is friendly and helpful. My mom has her own room, and they check on her a lot. Her room works really well for her and how it is set up. The staff members are really attentive to her.

I visited this facility

I had an in-person tour of Carrington of Shafter. We were really pleased with the level of compassion and the helpfulness, and they were just very willing to do whatever we were going to need. It was really just an amazing service. I really liked the space, that it was very homey. It didn't feel like a hospital. Their doors were open, and the residents were not just shut up in their room. It just felt really comfortable. They do provide working with care facilities around the clock. They had activities. We just felt like as close to home as I felt like it was, I suppose, the acceptable feeling in the environment that would be not clinical.

I visited this facility

I toured Carrington of Shafter. Overall, the staff was overwhelmingly welcoming and gave us a lot of information. The home was an older house, but it had a real homey feeling. All the patients' doors were open and you could see that they had their belongings. And there was a community center where the staff was doing puzzles with them, and they were watching TV. It just seemed like everybody there was at home and comfortable. They were 1-bedrooms in appearance, the size of someone's bedroom. You could either bring your own stuff in, or they provided a bed and a nightstand. But most of them had personal belongings, pictures, they all seem to have TVs and recliner chairs. So it was just their own little area. The place is well kept and very clean. They had a service room for church facilities and Bible study. They had a recreation room that was very large with couches and chairs, tables and chairs for games, a kitchen area, and a TV. It was quite large, and it had windows to the side that have a patio for outdoor visiting. They have an onsite beauty salon and a dining area. And it's also attached to a senior apartment that does not have assisted living, but you get to eat there. So if you're older and you can take care of yourself, there are apartments and then you also get to use any of the facilities there. The dining area was very large, was well lit, and had windows. It looked like there was a piano in there, so maybe people could come and visit. It was a very large spread-out area, so it wasn't compacted, they didn't have the cafeteria filled. It just looked like maybe more of a dining hall.

Carrington Of Shafter was nice. We have no complaints. My mom's room there was nice and big. It's an older community in terms of the building, but they kept it up really well. It was clean and didn't smell bad. It was a good community. The staff was pretty good, although there were some that I liked better than others. They played bingo, they did crafts, and watched movies together. They provided a lot of activities for the seniors. It's more for people who come out of their rooms during the day, but my mom wasn't very social. The food was good. The prices were the most reasonable in the county. The reason we picked them in the first place was because they had been recommended and were close to me.

I visited this facility

Carrington of Shafter's food was not so good. The best thing about it was that it's secured and there's a gate. The seniors were protected and could walk on the grounds. The staff was very friendly and caring, but the place was understaffed.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother was a resident at Carrington from June 2015 until she passed away in March 2016. In the 10 months that she was there she was well cared for and was very happy with her accommodations. All of the staff was very attentive, plenty of activities for the residents and the facilities were clean. I could drop in at any time and I was pleased with the conditions of her living quarters and her personal hygiene. Also, the food was excellent as I had eaten lunch seveal times with my mother. If the time comes that I need assisted living I hope Carrington is still in business.

Carrington of Shafter was a blessing to my family. We moved our "grandpa" in there at a very difficult time in our life. He was suffering from dementia and my grandma was wearing herself down trying to take care of him. As a family we had never experienced this disease and had unrealistic expectations. We choose Carrington because when we walked in we felt comfortable, it didn't feel like a hospital it felt like a really large home. Every employee in that building positively impacted our lives in some way and even when our "grandpa" passed away the staff somehow made it bearable. I highly recommend Carrington of Shafter. Our family is so thankful we did.

My Grandmother has been a resident of Carrington for over a year. The facility is clean, well staffed with friendly loving employees. My Grandmother fell and broke her hip a few months back. The director and other staff members visited my grandmother while she was in the hospital and during her stay in skilled nursing. They didn't have to do all of that, they did it because they truly care for the residents. I have seen what else is out there during my grandmothers "skilled nursing" days of recovery. Carrington staff have done far more for her recovery than the “Skilled Nursing” did. I visit almost daily and have seen the way they care for all the residents that are in the facility. I feel so blessed and It gives my family and myself peace of mind to know that my grandma is somewhere with people that truly care for her.

I placed my mother at Carrington about 4 months ago after her release from a skilled nursing facility. I live out of state and had to rely heavily on the help of friends and family on making this move for her. My mom while limited in mobility, still has her wits and is very active socially. Carrington has been an excellent fit for her and Carrington's staff has been extremely accommodating to her. I talk to her many times a week and she always has something positive to say and appears to be very happy. I'm more than satisfied with our decision to move mom into Carrington and would greatly recommend this facility to anyone who is looking for a new home for their loved one.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Some of the caregivers at Carrington were very nice, but they weren’t very attentive. My mother fell, and was on the floor for hours before they ever checked on her. They didn’t have any kind of call system for her to call for help. She came out of there malnourished because she didn’t get enough protein, and she stayed in her room most of the time. They didn’t have anything for her to do because most of the residents have dementia. She was alert, oriented, and didn’t have anybody to relate to. So, she just stayed in her room, and watched TV because there wasn’t anybody to even talk with her. The food wasn’t adequate; very little variety, and very little protein or fresh fruits. Some of the people were nice. They just were incompetent. When she went in there her blood count was good, and when she left her protein had dropped below normal. Like I said, she was malnourished from being in there because she didn’t get enough to eat, didn’t get enough protein, and there were no fresh fruits and vegetables; an occasional iceberg lettuce salad, but that was it. They needed to improve their diet, they needed a call system for the residents to call for help if they were to fall, and be able to call for help from the room. Most of the residents had dementia, and she was one of only two that could carry on a conversation. So they didn’t have anything for her to do. I saw them sitting in the hallway, and I didn’t see any community room or anything else for them to do.

My mother has Alzheimer's and has been at Carrington several months now. She has improved greatly since being there. She seems to get very good care there and is more active than before. Every one is very nice and the facility seems very clean and smells good. Our family is very happy so far.

My mother is at Carrington of Shafter; it's really close to her home. It's nice and clean. They have a staff that cleans the room and inside the facility, and other staff for the outside. The staff is good; it's a small town, so everybody knows everybody. They help her with bathing, dressing, and preparing the meal. Her room is carpeted with a walk-in closet and a bathroom; no kitchenette. Food is one thing that she doesn't like there. But, the dining area is nice.

I chose Carrington of Shafter for my father because it's a smaller facility and it's close to me. They have around 40 or so beds and it was nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The price was within my range. They do have field trips, movies, and bingo. They also have an activity director although I really don't know much about the activities because my father has Alzheimer's.

My grandmother spent the last few months of her life at Carrington Assisted Living in Shafter, CA. Our experience was wonderful. The facility was clean and it smelled nice. The staff seemed helpful and caring. My grandmother's mental issues made her hard to get along with sometimes but I always sensed that the staff was prepared to deal with people in her situation and I never feared that she would be mistreated. Whenever there was an issue (and there were more than a few issues) they were quick to call and explain the situation and discuss how it would be resolved. The cost of the facility was less than other similar facilities we talked to in Bakersfield, CA. It still was not cheap but it fit my grandmother's budget. I would definitely recommend Carrington Assisted Living of Shafter to someone who is looking for a clean, safe and affordable place to take care of themselves or a loved one.
