I saw both the assisted living side and the memory unit at High Desert Haven. I'm very familiar with this establishment because I'm a docent at our local museum and we bring programs to that facility from time to time and the people who participate in the programs are primarily still cognizant and don't wander. The side that has the memory unit at High Desert Haven is the locked-up unit. It is a brand new facility. It's very clean. It's got a large common area where people can sit and watch TV. It's small, and each apartment has a bedroom and private bath, which is really nice and very clean. We thought the place was well staffed for the number of people it had and I thought it was extremely reasonable for the services they provide. The cost there was quoted as being $4100 a month, which included food, linen care, and many other things. They charged extra if the person needed to be fed or if there were unusual needs. It seemed to be a very reasonable place, very clean and very well cared for. There weren't people roaming in wheelchairs and moaning and crying as I've seen in other facilities. I thought they treated the people there with dignity. It's a nice place. We have many friends that have been there from time to time and all of the reports we've heard about the food are very complimentary about it. In my past dealings with the assisted living place and with our visit yesterday, I was very impressed with the people. The staff was very caring and seemed happy. From what I've seen in the past, they treat their residents with dignity and care.

I did a tour of High Desert Haven. It was wonderful, they were very responsive. They let us come up several times to take a look around. The place is very clean and very homey. It was a great place. I only dealt with the director. I really didn't see anyone else. Her name was Carolyn, and she was an absolute joy. She was very helpful with everything. They happened to be playing bingo when we went by that day. But they had their calendar of activities posted on the wall. There was a library, and they had a little salon. I thought the place was great.

High Desert Haven was beautiful, looked really nice and clean, and the level of care was more in line with what we need for my grandmother. She could be either in the facility closest to the activities, so that she wouldn't have to travel very far and be assisted to different functions that were going on, like the activities, the community room, and the dining area, or she could have a place that was a little more independent. The independent location would be a little further away so she would have a little bit of a walk into the facility. There's a memory care facility just right next door within walking distance and the one that we were looking at was the assisted care because it offers more on-site care that she needed. The location looked well cared for. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I got to meet the people that prepare the meals and they were very friendly. I met some of the residents and they seemed very happy. I saw both an unoccupied and an occupied room and I could see the activities that were going on. I would highly recommend it. I saw the menu and it looked perfectly fine. They were willing to work with us if we had any special dietary needs. They had vegetarian meals available and they wanted to know if she might be allergic to anything and that was just above and beyond. The facility was lovely. I especially appreciated the design of it. It was easy to get into, so that a person in a wheelchair has easy access. It's situated in a place in the community where there were some lovely views. The halls were wide and the rooms were especially designed so that there wasn't a lot of room to fall down. They were easy to get around in if you have limited mobility. The facility was thoughtfully designed.

My mother-in-law is extremely happy at High Desert Haven. It's a very clean facility. It's a newly built wing. The caregivers are very nice and she's very happy with them. Since it's a memory care unit, one person will read and they'll have storytime. I've seen them do activities like rolling a ball back and forth, they take walks outside, and they have an organist come in and play once or twice a week. The meals are very good. They have the menus posted and they seem to be healthy, but also restaurant quality. I sat with a table of five or six residents who all agreed that it was restaurant quality, and they're very happy. They get private rooms.

My father is at High Desert Haven. It is clean and well-organized. The administrative staff is very helpful and very patient in all my inquiries and calls. They call me when something comes in, so there is communication going on there. I sat with him and stayed with him at meals; the food appeared to be good. Meal times are regular. The hands-on staff that provides him with bathing, dressing, and medication and such are very friendly. My father can be a little demanding at times, so they're really good with him. They have a couple of different choices of apartments. When I placed him, he was predominantly in a wheelchair, but now he has progressed to mostly walkers; however, he still uses the wheelchair at times. I chose one of the rooms that are kind of in the interior of the building, and it is nice. It has a nice shower that he can use with his walker; there is no lift on the shower. The other ones were more like very small apartments with outdoor access. His room is one that goes to indoor hallway, and it is very close to the administration office just down the hall. With regards to security, I don't think it is real secure in the sense that you can get the key to the room and lock it. My father doesn't have one for his room, but he could do that. There are residents nearby him that do have keys. As far as safety, there was one incident where he had an accident because the girl that was assisting him with showering let go of him, and he fell, so that wasn't so good. For the most part, they're pretty good. He gets the care that he needs. His condition has improved greatly since I moved him there. They have a game room. When I have been there, I've seen card games going on. They have music in the dining hall as well as in the activity room. They have a nice little lobby, and there is a variety of residents there -- people that are a little more independent and active and then others that require more care. Overall, High Desert Haven has been very good to us. They have been very helpful. They have been very good to my father, and they help him a lot. High Desert Haven is not super fancy, but it is nice. It is not depressing, but it is clean, and they have done some upgrades. They have good housekeeping staff.

My grandmother likes it there. She says the facility and her room is always kept clean and tidy. She also says that everyone is very nice there, the staff members and the other seniors. When she gets lonely she just goes to the common area and there is always someone to talk to.
