My mom is in Bellevue Loving Care Home, which is an adult family home. They’re very professional. The women that own it are two nurses, so they know what they’re doing. I feel like Raluca, who owns the home, is very much an advocate as far as getting things that Mom needs. She’s very professional, she asked the right things. As far as prescriptions, and even Tylenol, we can’t just go get Mom Tylenol, we have to make sure the doctor has ordered it and that she follows the protocol really carefully. The home is very, very clean, and very nice, so it’s great. It’s nice, she runs a really good business. My mom says the food is good, and she’s getting her used to it. They seem to be getting her diabetes under control better because her blood sugar is good. Her room is really small, but it’s fine for Mom, because she’s really not even out of bed. They are getting her into the wheelchair so she doesn’t have bed sores, and they got her out onto the deck because they have a pretty deck. It’s very expensive, but it’s very nicely done.

We toured Aegis Living Bellevue Overlake. They’re very high-end. We did have a nice meal there. The reason why we kind of rejected them is they had no units that were what my stepdad was looking for. It was very much of a compromise on that. They had two units that were next door to each other that combined into one. So, they ended up with two kitchens and two bedrooms and it was just weird. They were trying to accommodate somebody’s use for a two-bedroom apartment, but it wasn’t set up that way. It was like, here’s a bedroom over here, and over across the hall there’s a bedroom over there. It just doesn’t make any sense. Most of the people who move in there are looking at one-bedrooms or studios. It was a very nice lady who would take us all over the place and show us stuff. But there’s nothing memorable though about it. The person was being nice and accommodating and just showing us around. The food was well prepared. It took a long time to get it, but it was nicely prepared, and it was attractive. The physical room facility for the dining area was very nice. What I remember about, one thing that struck me as very strange is that my stepdad had an egg salad sandwich, and it was on toast, and it all spills out when you eat. What I had was one of the nicest salads I’ve ever had in my life. So, everything is a matter of what it is that you order. But he was not happy with his meal, and I was deliriously happy with mine. They have a movie theater, gaming rooms, and all of the special dining facilities that you could use. Their stuff is nice, but it costs. We met the physical therapy people and I think we met the chef, which was nice and all of that. The people that we met were very pleasant and very nice. They were lovely.

I still work full-time and I never worry that she is okay. Staff is attentive and have consistent communication with me so I know how she’s doing, what she needs, and what they need from me. The culture of the whole operation is positive and supportive. Truly a good place.

It’s a newer facility and it’s like living in a hotel, which I would like for myself, but not for my mother. She might be going into memory care and the place could be depressing for somebody in her condition.

The Washington State Long-Term Care Ombudsman program assists seniors and their families with issues or complaints with long-term care facilities. It also protects the rights of the elderly and educates them about the benefits and programs offered through Medicaid and Medicare. Ombudsmen help find resolutions for situations involving quality of care, seniors' rights, elder abuse and other aspects of dignity and personal rights for residents in long-term care facilities.

The Senior Center of West Seattle provides support, socialization and activities to promote the health and wellness of area seniors. Fitness classes include yoga, exercise, qigong and tai chi. Activities include cribbage, mah-jongg, live music and drumming workshops.

The Hyde Shuttle program offers seniors van service to locations throughout King County. Rides are provided for meal programs, medical appointments, senior centers, grocery stores, medical appointments and other local destinations.
