Inspiration for This Nomination:
Barbra "BJ" C. is one of those caregivers that always looks beyond the job with each of her clients for things she can do to enrich their lives. She does a lot of crafts and when her clients show interest she works with them on her own time to help them learn the craft themselves. This provides them with something they can do for family and friends for gifts, holidays, etc. We had one particular client who was challenged mentally having the maturity level of approximately a 10 year old child even though she was in her 70s who had never been allowed to celebrate Christmas. Her family that usually cared for her had become frustrated with providing her care due to the constant challenge she presented so they had moved her to a senior apartment in a town 30 miles from the rest of the family. They only came to visit her 1 time each month and were relying on our staff and the apartment manager to care for her. She was alone most o f the time except for her service times and when the manager dropped by. All on her own time, not during the work hours, BJ took time to get her acquainted with her neighbors in the complex and planned and prepared Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday dinners for her and invited other staff and her acquaintances to celebrate the holidays with her. That Christmas, BJ crafted a small Christmas tree and decorated the tree and her apartment and recruited friends and other staff to buy small Christmas gifts and place under the tree for her. On Christmas morning BJ was there early and prepared breakfast and had a couple of her friends be there while she opened her presents. BJ spent the entire day with her, prepared Christmas dinner for her and her guest, providing the client with her very first Christmas celebration. The joy this brought to this particular client was indescribable. This is not a one time incident of BJ's care for our elderly but a way of life and a way of caring for her clients that she serves.
Caregiver's Best Skills and Attributes:
Along with providing excellent personal care and homemaker services her genuine compassion and care for the elderly, disabled and people in general. She is absolutely dependable to perform all scheduled shifts and is willing to serve wherever we need her to serve. She is able to quickly develop a trusting relationship between herself and clients and recognize areas of their daily lives in which their needs are not being met. She works with our scheduling and supervisory staff to put plans in action to meet those needs.
Feedback About This Caregiver:
We constantly receive expressions of gratitude and appreciation. Not only from the clients but also from family members who are unable to be available to meet the needs of their family member. All comments we receive on surveys and supervisory visits are very complimentary, appreciative, and positive with specific designation to BJ, naming her in their responses.
What Others Have Learned From This Caregiver:
Yes, she is a consistent demonstration of how compassion and genuine care and concern can turn the most difficult clients around in their attitude and behavior toward others. She is responsible for many of our other staff changing their approach to their jobs as well with them becoming more involved with the overall quality of their clients lives. Her example of providing care has elevated our company's recognition for providing a high level of quality care within our community and referral sources we serve.
More About This Caregiver:
BJ's humble and genuine caring approach to performing her job duties and enriching the lives of her clients beyond the scope of work performance not only enhances the quality of the lives of her clients, but is contagious in the performance of duty to other caregivers on our staff. She is a true testimony of how just 1 person can positively impact an organization and her hometown community at large tremendously.

Read More Stories | Find Home Care | Hire This Company: Silver AngelsI'm very lucky. I was taught generosity of spirit by this person...she's my mother. I'm flatly telling you you're hard pressed to find someone who has a bigger heart. My job is to interact with people and I'm not saying this as her son, I'm saying it as a professional, this lady is a gentle, caring soul who has great things coming to her. I couldn't be more proud of her.
BJ is a great asset to our company! Every home she goes into, she gives her all. She also does thoughtful things for our office staff also. I sometimes wonder where she gets her energy!
