Research shows that elderly people find life far more satisfying when they have a sense of purpose and a connection with their community. If your parents are lonely or bored, you may want to encourage them to join Senior Corps or pursue other volunteer opportunities. Senior Corps, which helps seniors find volunteer opportunities based upon their specific interests and experience, is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency. Volunteering isn't feasible if your parent is severely impaired, of course, but even seniors with mobility problems and minor health complaints can be foster grandparents or provide literacy training.
