As language skills start to fade in mid-Alzheimer's disease, communicating with touch becomes increasingly helpful. You can telegraph caring and love with a simple hug. This gesture is often especially welcomed by people with dementia. But make sure it's of sufficient length -- seven seconds is a good rule of thumb -- so your parent gets the message. A perfunctory hug can be too quick to register.
