Will a lawsuit settlement affect my mother's disability eligibility?

My mother had a heart attack 7 months ago. Unable to work she has turned to disability, but she has a lawsuit pending for illegal dumping on her property. If a settlement is reached will this affect her being approved for disability?  Will it be considered income? What is the best way to handle it so my siblings can't run through the money?
