Alzheimer's support

Hi all,

I'm new here. My mother is 75 years old and has been diagnosed with the beginning stages of Alzheimers. She is on Aricept. My mother has been a heavy drinker (every night to the point of intoxication) most of her life...

My mom has reached a new stage in her disease. She isn't herself saying things that would be hurtful if she was herself but the mother I knew isn't alive anymore.  Her body is here, but the mother I knew is gone. The sadness is affecting my life as if everyone is happy except me...

Has anyone had to make the decision to close down your parents kitchen (stove)? At least once a week I come home only to find a lingering smell of something that has burned on the stove earlier in the day...

I live with my Mom & bipolar adult brother becausemy daughter is Type 1 diabetic & I can't afford my own place any more. It's not the life I would have chosen but I have no other chice right now...

My father has primary dementia and has been taking Aricept.  With insurance, the cost of the med each month is $ 166.00.  Is there another cheaper alternative to this?  There are probably many that don't take it b/c of its cost. 

My Mom's Dr. changed her medication from buspar to zoloft.  She did not seem depressed before, but now she does not even want to drink her coffee, which is one of her favorite things.  Her Doc is out of town, does anyone have experience with Zoloft...
